‘Cabin in the Woods’ – New ol’? Or same ol’?
Categories: movies. |

Word on the street has been that ‘Cabin in the Woods’ was going to be some kind of defining moment in slasherdom. As Whedon himself has said, it will be “the horror movie to end all horror movies”.

But based on the ad campaign…

…this doesn’t look like territory that hasn’t been fully explored by ‘Scream’.

I know, I know – don’t judge a book by its cover. Fair enough. But if this redefining movie didn’t look like a cross between ‘Cabin Fever’, ‘Hatchet’, and the aforementioned ‘Scream’, I’d be little more excited.

That tag line…I don’t know. I can’t even think of how I should feel about that.

  2. Yeah… I’m starting to wonder if it’s something where “victims” are chosen and told what to do in different situations? So this tagline is like one of the directives? Like a reality show? Like… gulp… Halloween: Resurrection?

    Book by its cover, though.

  3. Todd says:

    OLD MAN
    (laughing hysterically)
Mmmm…Do NOT even go there. Do NOT go there.
    (stops laughing)
No guys, seriously…don’t go that cabin.

  4. Harwell says:

Did you see the 2 other versions? None are as good as Todd’s, of course, but still…

Okay — now that I see the other two posters, it makes more sense. But the “If an old man warns you not to go there… Make fun of him” is really hard to figure. The creepy old man who warns the kids not to go to a particular place occurs in horror movies (though strangely I can’t think of a single one), doesn’t seem to be as boilerplate a horror movie trope as the marketers here seem to think. Maybe I just haven’t seen enough horror movies, but for me, the read on this tagline is not instant. The other two are better but yeah on the surface, looks like a Scream retread.

But I’m still pretty interested in this one because Bradley Whitford and Richard Jenkins star in it and, I believe they play the bad guys. That should be fascinating because these guys would definitely be playing against type.

  6. Yeah, I had seen the other and I do think this is the weakest one. The old man warning kids of certain doom is at least from Friday the 13th. And Hatchet, from I think 2007 (I’m not lookin’ that junk up) had a poster with the tagline “It’s not a remake. It’s not a sequel. And it’s not based on a Japanese one.”, which was pretty great for a slasher flick at the time and I think kinda takes the wind out of these wink, wink taglines here (though I think these taglines will play into what the movie is about, whereas the tagline was probably the best part of Hatchet).

Agreed, the creative line up does seem pretty great, right down the line. It’s the only reason I want to see the movie. All the hubris (pardon my French) and super clever marketing is harshing my mellow, though.
